UUVA Write-a-thon Registration

This National level writing competition is organised by UUVA under the guidance of Saurabh Nanda (SN), a renowned International Youth Mentor. SN has used his way with words in writing, speaking and story telling to address a wide variety of audiences from students and teachers to leaders from the UN, ex-diplomats and corporate honchos in India, Japan and Denmark. His articles regularly appear in National Media in India. His podcast, Such Conversations Matter and his work towards Cyber Bullying awareness were recently awarded with a National Award organised by the Dainik Jagran Group and facilitated by the Minister of State for Education.


He believes in “Talk with Purpose” and ”Democratising Access to Information”. His mentees’ scholarly articles have received national level recognition from Institutes of National Importance, such as NIT Jalandhar. His mentees’ body of work has gotten them scholarships to the best universities in India and Abroad. He is the official youth mentor for initiatives led by Government of India, the UN in Japan and international organisations in China. Through UUVA, SN intends to ignite the same passion for communication in budding change makers across India.


This essay competition is open to school students. Students will be divided into two groups:


Junior Category: Grade 5 to Grade 8

Senior Category: Grade 9 to Grade 12


This is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate your passion for, or interest in, writing and showcase your talents on a national stage. The goal of this competition is to encourage creative and critical thinking. The competition is hosted completely online, breaking down geographical barriers and providing a unique opportunity to students from all over India to explore and develop their writing interests.

  • Uncover lesser-known knowledge for more informed decision making, 
  • Unleash the passions of students for various domains so that they can flourish fearlessly with confidence 
  • Vocalize their innovative ideas to fill up currently existing foundation lacunae in the system and
  • Actualise a career domain / pathway such that it leads to happy careers of the future. Expressing opinions and ideas about things the youth is passionate about.


Essay Prompts for the Competition: (write on any one of the below topics)

  • Imagine a scenario where food could talk. Describe a typical conversation with characters of your choice. 
  • Unity in Diversity, year 2075
  • All Lives Matter, year 2022
  • There are no winners in war - use the Russia Ukraine Conflict to elucidate your stand.
  • 75 years of India’s independence.


Winning essays will be published on the UUVA’s Online Publication, and winners will get a special ‘Ask Me Anything’ session with SN to hone their skills and develop their profiles for the future.


Rules:

  1. The word limit of 1000 must be strictly adhered to. Any words past the limit will be truncated. This limit excludes references, footnotes, titles, headers and footers.
  2. Only the first submission will be accepted. Any further submissions will not be read.
  3. References must be included and any plagiarism will lead to disqualification.
  4. The only accepted document formatting is .pdf or .docx. Any other format will not be accepted.
  5. Refunds will not be given to those who do not follow this rule.
  6. Students from Class 5 to Class 12 are permitted to participate.


Judging Criteria

  1. Creativity: This criterion will be the main focus of the competition. Students have to display the ability to think “outside the box”. The piece must have an innovative approach toward the topic and grab the reader’s attention and make them think.
  2. Structure: This criterion will judge the structure of your piece; is your piece organized in a comprehensive way. The piece should have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. If you choose to use an unorthodox format, please make sure it is coherent and impressive.
  3. Language use: This criterion involves the usage of correct grammar, punctuation, apt vocabulary, and spelling. 
  4. Adherence to topic: The essay may find many unusual ways to address the topic, they should however be responding to the chosen topic clearly.
  5. “Wow!” factor: Points will be awarded for exceptional creative writing pieces - display of an incredible use of vocabulary, clever ideas, or approach to the topic.
